As the tranquil waters off the East Johor Straits embrace our sails and the wind whispers through the masts, Changi Sailing Club stands not only as a sanctuary for enthusiasts of the sea but also as a steward of our marine environment. Today, amidst the gentle lapping of waves against our shores, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment—an opportunity to lead by example in environmental sustainability.
At Changi Sailing Club, we recognise the profound impact that human activities can have on our oceans and marine life. From plastic pollution to carbon emissions, the challenges facing our seas are urgent and undeniable. As sailors and stewards of this pristine coastline, we have a responsibility to safeguard these waters for future generations.
That is why we are committed to investing in environmental sustainability. From reducing our carbon footprint to promoting eco-friendly practices, Changi Sailing Club is dedicated to minimising our impact on the environment while maximising our enjoyment of these beautiful waters. We have already taken steps to support impactful environmental initiatives, implement recycling programmes, reduce single-use plastics, and educate our members about sustainable boating practices.
One such initiative is our recent partnership with Witteveen+Bos, a leading environment and engineering consultancy, on the Oyster Reef Project, providing support and venue for the cultivation and study of living seawalls made from recycled oyster shells in Singapore. These artificial reefs play an important role in improving water quality and adapting to climate change impacts by cleaning and filtering the surrounding waters, providing a habitat for marine life, and helping protect against coastal erosion due to flooding and rising sea levels. The Oyster Reef not only provides ecological benefits but also contributes to sustainable coastal management and community involvement in environmental conservation. This pilot programme was supported by the SG Eco Fund, a $50 million initiative under the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment that supports environmental sustainability initiatives in the community. It gave the team seed funding to help kick-start the project.
However, initiatives like this require substantial support and ongoing funding, with a lens for sustainable investing. Sustainable investing is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic one. Companies and organisations that prioritise sustainability tend to be more resilient and better positioned for long-term success. By investing in renewable energy, adopting green technologies, and supporting policies that protect our oceans, we can ensure a sustainable future for all. Such investments can lead to innovation, cost savings, and enhanced reputation, benefiting both businesses and the environment.
To achieve this, we call upon financial institutions and technology sectors to join us in this crucial endeavour. ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investors play a vital role in driving the transition towards a more sustainable economy. By focusing on ESG criteria, these investors encourage businesses to operate responsibly and sustainably. Their investments help fund projects and companies committed to reducing environmental impact, promoting social good, and adhering to strong governance practices. This, in turn, can lead to better risk management, improved financial performance, and positive societal outcomes. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond our shores.
Imagine a world where every business, every organisation, every individual takes responsibility for their environmental impact. A world where our oceans thrive, our marine life flourishes, and our coastline remains a haven for sailors and sea creatures alike. This vision is within our reach, but it requires collective action and unwavering commitment.
As members of Changi Sailing Club, we are privileged to witness the beauty and serenity of these waters every day. Let us rise to the challenge and lead by example. We hope to inspire others to follow suit and invest in environmental sustainability. Together, we can make a difference—one wave at a time.
Let us embark on this journey towards a greener, cleaner future. The winds of change are upon us. Will you join us in steering towards a sustainable horizon?
